ژیمناستیک از ورزش های المپیکی است که از ابتدای برگزاری المپیک حضور داشته و در سه سطح نمایشی ، ریتمیک و ترامپولین برگزار می شود . نکته بسیار مهمی که در این رشته وجود دارد این است که تعداد مدال های توزیع شده این رشته در مسابقات المپیک (54 مدال) از تعداد بسیار بالایی برخوردار است. بطوریکه کشورهایی پیشرفته و صاحب سبک برای تصاحب مدال های این رشته ورزشی سرمایه گذاری های کلانی می کنند تا بتوانند در جدول توزیع مدال ها رتبه های بالا را بدست آورند . ورزش ژیمناستیک در المپیک در 10 رشته که شامل انفرادی تمام اسباب ، تیمی تمام اسباب، پرش از خرک ، حرکات زمینی، خرک حلقه ، دارحلقه، پارالل، بارفیکس، پوب موازنه، پارالل ناهمسطح برگزار می شود .
عموما ورزش ژیمناستیک درگروه ورزش های آمادگی جسمانی قرار دارد، و از رشته های پایه و اصلی می باشد که برای موفقیت در این رشته ورزشی، ورزشکاران می بایست از دوران کودکی به این رشته بپردازند.
